    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Fritz Haag, Kestener Paulinshofberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewachs, 2021

Hailing from a very old, well-known vineyard that used to be regarded at the highest level – a status Oliver looks set to return the site to. Compared to Brauneberger Juffer it has a little bit more clay with the slate, with less actual stones, which results in more powerful wines. You get more dark fruits here, more power, more creaminess and depth, though it’s wonderfully pure. A mere 200 cases were produced

    Fritz Haag

Weingut Fritz Haag has for decades been in the top tier of quality German wine production, thanks largely to efforts of the late, legendary Wilhelm Haag, who headed up the Mosel VDP for nigh-on twenty years. Run by son Oliver Haag since 2005, he manipulates the exceptional stony grey/blue slate vineyard of the Juffer in Brauneberg, the finest part of this being a large parcel surrounding the sun dial (Sonnenuhr). Depending on the vintage, he employs a varying mixture of wooden fuders and temperature controlled stainless-steel tanks, the former helping complexity and finesse, the latter preserving freshness and intensity. These are some of the most elegant, pure and enticing wines in Germany.
