Frühlingsplätzchen, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Cool white flowers, aromatic cracked herbs, freshly mown grass and lemon zest are just some of the brilliant flavours that come tumbling from the glass like a collection of flawless diamonds – this is a wine of supreme aromatic elegance and precision. On the palate there's a discreet note of oyster shell and salt to balance out the intense citrus and crisply salted peach notes in this glorious GG built on discretion and whispered length. Brilliant.

The 2017 Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling GG is still yeasty on the ripe, elegant and complex, slightly caramelly and vegetal (also volatile?) yet crystalline and precise nose. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, this is a mineral, very salty and almost drying, more austere Fruhlingsplatzchen that is somewhat shy and lean at the moment but a classic. A little bit austere on the finish. Tasted in July 2019.

In describing this bottling’s 2016 predecessor I led with the following: “Even more effusively floral than its Frühtau counterpart, this offers iris, violets and lily-of-the-valley.” That description holds as well for this 2017, where those characteristics also translate into musky, bittersweet inner-mouth perfumes. There are the lusciously juicy white peach and subtly green, clover-chomping counterpoint familiar from this year’s “Frühtau,” now in the context of enhanced textural refinement and buoyancy. Along with finishing salinity comes a complex, mouthwatering meaty-nutty-mineral savor akin to mussel stock.
