Frühlingsplätzchen, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

A soaring, elegant, classy feeling Riesling soaked in salted lemons, windswept herbs and a tense dry mineral extract supporting a ripe mouthfeel. The acidity is present but ripe not austere – very pure with touches of reduction and spice. This 2023 is a shapeshifter, as it keeps revealing new dimensions in the glass – not built around density or phenolics – this GG it is cut through with a fine shimmering acidity. The loam breakdown of the soils helps with water retention though technically Frühlingsplätzchen is a cooler site than the Halenberg. Produced from 30-year-old vines, fermented naturally and raised in traditional German casks. A red slate and gravel dominated site facing southwest to southeast.

The 2023 Fruhlingsplatzchen GG impresses with a dense and intense nose of perfectly ripe and spicy (pear) fruit. Dense and quite powerful on the palate, this is very rich but currently less finessed and frisky than usual. It takes time to transform its suppleness into elegance and finesse. When I told Frank Schonleber of my findings, he was surprised. He bottled a fresh and savory Fruhlingsplatzchen, he said. In autumn, I will taste all his 2023s in a new context and update my note (and eventually also the score). This is a great Riesling. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs is still reductive on the nose, but clarity and svelteness are apparent in the citric overtones of pale lemon. The palate then puts all the lemon on display. A pale, tart direction sets the tone for glimpses of riper Amalfi lemon peel with some juicy verve. Cooling, strait-laced Nahe stoniness counters this, and the two elements drive each other forward. The finish is linear, lemony and so long. The 2023 is elegant and energetic at the same time. (Bone-dry)
