Halenberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A haunting pale scented Riesling which draws you in with its dry, cool, smoke and wild bouquet standing astride a core of fresh lime and citrus and zesty lemons. Pure and elegant and very salty, fluid and finessed. Not showy but supremely classy. Technically Halenberg is warmer than Frühlingsplätzchen, but its poor soils and quartzite presence lend a cooler profile to the wines – providing you pick it at the right time. Here, ripeness moves quickly.

96/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Frank Schonleber's 2023 Halenberg Riesling GG is one of the most impressive dry wines from this vintage in all of Germany. It's very clear, fine and elegant but rich and complex on the nose that benefits from the deep slate soil and shows iodine notes. Dense and powerful yet also zesty, this is very complex, long and persistently salty. This is a great Riesling. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs still swings with a little yeasty, reductive funk. The palate is stony, slender, svelte, concentrated and sinewy. At the core, a lovely trace of orange peel appears amidst taut, bright yellow citrus aromatics, stony, vivacious, strait-laced and so racy. Nahe, stone and lemon in a glass. Wonderful. (Bone-dry)
