Monzinger Halenberg, Riesling, Auslese, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

An Auslese that we can rightly call a micro-cuvee, comprising just 400L in total, 40% of which was botrytised. A panoply of beautiful things. Lavender, violet and wild berries sit atop a riper mango and apricot base; this Auslese has a seamless flow to it, being sweet and charming and seductive but in no way heavy or taxing. So fresh and vital, enlivening stuff. Frank explained that “for me, a certain amount of botrytis in Auslese is essential but I never want any in my Spätlese”.

critic reviews

93/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2021 Halenberg Auslese offers a fascinatingly clear, precise and intense bouquet with fine raisin and orange or pink grapefruit aromas. Dense, sweet and lush on the palate, this is a generous but pretty mild Auslese with a saline finish. Dense and sweet but also crystalline, this is a promising Auslese but no alternative nor a relative to the Halenberg GG. Natural cork. 7.5% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.
