    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
    Les Champs Libres, Guinaudeau, 2017

A 100% Sancerre clone Sauvignon Blanc from Fronsac’s clay and limestone soils matured in barrels though displaying no obvious wood character such is the pure and crystalline lemongrass, lime peach and mint character that charges from the glass. There’s a beautiful balance, as finely weighted as they come with layer after layer of clear sweet citrus fruit and stones, impressive concentration and texture and a zesty and highly persistent finish. Hard to pin down as Sauvignon Blanc, but entirely Champs Libres. One of Bordeaux’s truly great whites.

The white 2017 Les Champs Libres from Guinaudeau waltzes out of the glass with vibrant notes of preserved apricots, lemon curd, and spiced pear, plus hints of beeswax and elderflower, with a waft of chalk dust. Medium-bodied, the palate has beautiful texture with a racy backbone cutting through the intense citrus and stone fruit layers, finishing with epic length.

The 2017 Les Champs Libres was picked from 29 August to 2 September according to winemaker Baptiste Guinaudeau (see Lafleur in Pomerol). It has an attractive bouquet with nectarine, white peach and a touch of almond, all very well defined and showing a little more intensity than the Grand Village Blanc tasted alongside. The palate is well balanced with a twist of sour lemon on the entry, fine depth with plenty of energy. There is a touch of sea salt towards the finish with a hint of ginger on the aftertaste, completing what is rapidly becoming one of the benchmark white wines of Bordeaux.
