    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Phelan Segur has been on terrific form since 2018. The run continues although, we didn't feel the 2021 is quite up the levels achieved in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Lots of purple, expressive fruit. Tight, but quite fluid and very alive. Produced from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot.

The 2021 Phelan Segur has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It needs a fair bit of shaking to wake up notes of red and black currants, fresh blackberries, and crushed stones, plus nuances of espresso, cedar chest, and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with black fruit and earthy layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and savory.

They do a great job at Phélan of maintaining estate character consistently, and here you get the damson and blackberry fruit of St Estephe, with a full mid palate. The tannins are a little angular through the finish from the fresh acidities but this is an enjoyable wine. Harvest September 29 to October 13. IPT 85. 55% new oak. An upscore, tasted twice.

The 2021 Phélan Ségur has a very appealing bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry and cedar scents, a touch of black truffle coming through with time. It conveys Saint-Estèphe typicity. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite tensile with a fine bead of acidity. It constitutes a linear and perhaps more conservative Phélan that should age well in bottle. Tasted twice.

    William Kelley,

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with notions of rose petals, pipe tobacco, sweet spices and loamy soil, the 2021 Phelan Segur is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with impressive depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. Concentrated and well-constructed, this is a serious wine with a bright future ahead of it. It's a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Tasted five times, twice at the estate.
