    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The 2023 St Joseph Rouge is a total charmer, offering fresh red and black berries, juicy acidity and a real drinkable feel, without wanting for clear, crisp Syrah character. A destemmed St Joseph Rouge which represents the crispier, more sapid Syrahs found in the northern part of the St Joseph appellation, around the village of Chavanay, as opposed to the warmer, more baritone heartlands around Hermitage. Aged for around 18 months in 500L French oak, 15% of which is new.

Complex and spicy, Perret's Chavanay-based 2018 Saint Joseph offers up hints of hickory smoke, cracked pepper and ripe cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and seductive, finishing with lip-smacking deliciousness. Drink it over the next 5 years.

Assertively perfumed dark berry, cherry and licorice aromas are sharpened by black pepper and mineral flourishes. Silky, energetic blueberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter in the glass and pick up a smoky flourish on the back half. Firms up steadily with air and finishes spicy and quite long, displaying even tannins and a resonating blackberry quality.
