Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Fritz Haag, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2020

Much more intense and mineral than the Juffer bottling, the Juffer Sonnenuhr has a pronounced salinity and intensity that is so deftly delivered. We can’t recall a young vintage that was so immediately charming and engaging. A fruit basket on the palate but with real cool undertones of slate and veritable Mosel elegance.

Fritz Haag

Weingut Fritz Haag has for decades been in the top tier of quality German wine production, thanks largely to efforts of the late, legendary Wilhelm Haag, who headed up the Mosel VDP for nigh-on twenty years. Run by son Oliver Haag since 2005, he manipulates the exceptional stony grey/blue slate vineyard of the Juffer in Brauneberg, the finest part of this being a large parcel surrounding the sun dial (Sonnenuhr). Depending on the vintage, he employs a varying mixture of wooden fuders and temperature controlled stainless-steel tanks, the former helping complexity and finesse, the latter preserving freshness and intensity. These are some of the most elegant, pure and enticing wines in Germany.
