A selection of some of the younger vines in the GG vineyard Im Sonnenschein, handpicked, destemmed and given 24 hours of skin contact before fermentation in stainless steel and ageing on fine lees for 6-7 months. There is no battonage, no fining and only the lightest of filtration, meaning Hansjorgs Weisserburgunders are often very closed at first and need a few years in bottle. And so this is, youthfully reticent but crystal clear, with great definition and precision, and a real sense of purity as the notes of smooth stones, white pepper and pears gently weave across the palate.

The nose fascinatingly suggests oysters and mussels in its mingling of animal, herbal and mineral elements. With that come scents of apple, almond and lime. The full, surprisingly firm palate and lingering finish also happily surprise with their brightness of fruit, but only hint at the animal and mineral savor that the nose had led me to anticipate. Perhaps this just needs a bit more time in bottle.
