Liguria is a narrow, terraced landscape which traces the coastline of northwest Italy. The region's unique geography, with its coastal cliffs and high-altitude vineyards, imparts distinct characteristics to its wines. Best known for Vermentino (or Pigato), a handful of quality sub-regions such as Cinque Terre and Rossese di Dolceacqua produce singular wines with a clear identity.
Liguria has a distinctive geography which includes coastal cliff-vineyards, some of the most dramatic in Europe. Broadly though, Vermentino makes up 75% of the region’s production, with lesser-known grapes such as Bosco, Albarola, and Rossese making up the balance. Liguria offers a fascinating range of wines that capture the essence of its Mediterranean terroir.
Vermentino, often referred to locally as Pigato, is a white variety with attractive citrus and stone fruit flavours with high levels of refreshing acidity. Bosco, a primary grape in Cinque Terre wines, is celebrated for its resilience and ability to thrive on steep terraces, producing wines with minerality and a saline finish. Albarola, often blended with Bosco, brings floral notes and freshness to the wines. Rossese is the star red grape of the region, particularly in the Dolceacqua appellation. Known for its aromatic intensity, it produces red wines that are both vibrant and elegantly structured.
