Veneto

Situated in the northeastern part of Italy, the Veneto wine region is a cradle of viticulture that stretches from the Dolomites down to the Adriatic Sea. This geographical diversity provides an array of microclimates and terrains that are ideal for viticulture, the most famous of which are Soave and Soave Classico, Prosecco, Valpolicella and Amarone. It is also a major player when it comes to Pinot Grigio production from generally flatter, fertile vineyards. Ranging from volcanic soils in the eastern zones to calcareous in the western areas, the region is highly varied and produces a diverse range of wines.

Appellations of Veneto

As a testament to its quality and variety, Veneto has an impressive number of registered designations of origin. The region is home to 29 DOCs and 14 DOCGs, the highest tiers in the Italian wine quality pyramid. Among these, the key appellations of note are Valpolicella and Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, Soave Superiore DOCG, and Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG.

Grape Varieties of Veneto

The region is also a treasure trove of native grape varieties, including Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, which form the cornerstone of Valpolicella wines. Glera, the principal grape in Prosecco, and Pinot Grigio are other varieties that have achieved worldwide fame. It is this extraordinary range of grapes that enables Veneto to produce an extensive repertoire of wine styles, from effervescent Proseccos to full-bodied Amarones and light, refreshing Soave whites.
