    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

A fully Swartland White Blend produced from 49% Chenin Blanc, 10% Roussanne, 9% Semillon, 8%, Marsanne, 7% Clairette Blanche, 6% Viognier, 5% Verdelho, 4% Grenache Blanc and 2% Colombard (a new addition). “Colombard is an aromatic variety with good acidity so we give it a bit of skin contact to tame it – it comes from the Hoe-Steen site.” Philosophy remains the same; Chenin focused, old vines and granite dominant. Components all vinified separately and blended after 10 months, assembled for 1 month in tank before bottling. Just 12.5% ABV, down from 13% in previous years. Notes of citrus, orange blossom, lemon curd and bees wax with traces of essential oils. A total of 17 vineyards and 23 pickings go into this enormously complex, yet utterly delicious white blend.

The 2020 Aristargos has a well-defined nose that is very understated at first, opening to reveal light resin scents, but in need of more identifiable fruit characteristics. The palate is well balanced with a touch of bitter lemon on the entry, but – a bit like the nose – it lacks concentration and substance on the finish.
