Olivier Bernard has transformed Domaine de Chevalier during his tenure. In the early days, an ambitious re-planting program was undertaken, which took many years before the fruits of his labours could be enjoyed. Now the estate is in superb health and it seems that Olivier can turn out a great red and white vintage after vintage. The 2016 feels like it is perhaps trying a little too hard. What we love about Domaine de Chevalier is its charm and vibrancy. This is not La Mission Haut Brion, we don't expect a wildly complex or ethereal Pessac, Domaine de Chevalier is an honest, authentic, broad-shouldered wine that ages tremendously. The 2016 feels like there is more wine-making and the end result appears less cohesive and less convincing. Glossy plums, minerals, cooked meats and herbs. There is admirable black cherry and cassis fruit on the palate, which tails off with cranberries and raspberries. We're sure some critics will love this, but for us it doesn't have the freshness or elegance we expect from a great Domaine de Chevalier. Time will tell.
