    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Cos d'Estournel 2010 continues the modern theme, but this is not nearly as controversial as the magnificent 2009. A feature of the cool growing season has been the freshness and acidity in the 2010s. This is certainly apparent in the Cos. There is still huge extract and concentration, but the wine benefits from real lift in the form of fresh, balancing acidity. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. On the nose there are notes of fine herbs, cool cassis, graphite, cut flowers, crème de mûre and sweet earth. Fabulously concentrated with massive extract, unctuous cassis and flashy ripe dark berry fruit. This is a show stopping Cos; dense yet slick and refreshing thanks to the low pH. A polished, seductive, multilayered Cos; more classic than the 2009 and equally good.

Stands head and shoulders above the 2009 at this point, here you get the creaminess and power of a great vintage, with tannins that head towards monster-territory, and yet there is real delicacy and hidden complexity here, gorgeous quality, brilliant stuff, exoistc, incense , cinnamon; 100% new oak.

The 2010 Cos d’Estournel is a quite brilliant wine, although on this occasion it does not reach the rarefied heights of Montrose. It is endowed with precise black fruit laced with coniferous trees and undergrowth, a touch of Cuban cigar with time. The palate has more body and density than Montrose, but not the same crystalline character. Still, it is a great achievement and will offer decades of pleasure. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting.
