Technical director Dominique Arangoïts believes the 2021 Cos d'Estournel harks back to the vintages of the mid-80s (specifically 85 and 86). It weighs in with an ABV of just 12.74%, quite a departure from the heady days of 2009... The new direction, started by Aymeric de Gironde has been welcomed by most wine-lovers. We're certainly fans of Cos' new found purity and elegance, and despite classical ABVs, there's no lack of flavour, personality or ageing potential. A much darker, more intriguing profile (than Pagodes); black tea, dried flowers and Asian spices with lots of savoury, mineral notes. The palate continues this profile with bittersweet, dark, hedgerow fruits with raspberry highlights, gravelly cassis, spicy and crystalline with a hint of austerity. This feels classical, somewhat dominated by its structure at this moment, but what fruit is on display is tense and vital. Admirable precision – if this adds a little flesh through élevage it will be a ravishing Cos.
