Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

We thought Langoa Barton had been closing the gap on Leoville over the last decade, but there appears to be a chasm again in 2018. This is partly because Leoville is so good. Having said that, we were actually really impressed by Langoa this year. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new barrels, there is an abundance of clear raspberry, spice and suave red berry fruit on the nose. Beautiful clear, refined fruit continues on the palate: pure loganberry, creme de mûre; it's not voluptuous, but it is intense and packed with flavour. The tannins are grippy if a touch rustic, but they are well measured and frame the fruit nicely, adding seductive lingering nuances and impressive length.

The last few years have seen Langoa, in classically understated Barton way, turning into a barnstormer, with the value that was once reserved for Léoville. It's great in 2022, with its slightly cooler terroir really coming into its own. Luscious black cherry, sandalwood, campfire, crayon, crushed rocks, this is stuff, almost ready to go but will clearly deliver for decades.

The 2022 Langoa Barton has a wonderful bouquet that has really blossomed since I tasted it from barrel. There is still a trait of Margaux thanks to its wilted violet element, but there may be more graphite and tobacco tones now the wine is in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a precise, sensual finish. It's fresh and definitely a more elegant Langoa compared to recent vintages. Bon vin.

A blend of 56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Langoa Barton is ageing in 60% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it prances out with exuberant notes of warm cassis, blueberry pie, and Morello cherries, leading to hints of chocolate mint, clove oil, and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock full of juicy black fruits, framed by plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a spicy kick.
