    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Pessac Léognan, 2015

A class apart from almost anything else from the Pessac union des Grand Cru tastings, so much more zip and tension than some of its rather flabby and sweet competitors. Classy flavours that betray a faint touch of the exotic, notes of stone fruit and guava mixed with flavours of citrus, crushed nettles and herbs. For all of its ripeness and depth there is a wonderfully balancing steeliness to the finish. Top notch. A blend of 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon aged for 18 months in barriques. Harvested between the 7th and 23rd September with successive “tries” to pick the best fruit in optimum condition. In some cases even on the same row fruit was harvest in three “passages.”

Takes its time, even on the aromatics, to open and enlarge. Just such a confident white wine, with proven ageing ability, able to stand among the great whites of France. There is clear anise and fennel on the attack, white pepper spice, everything well defined and controlled, with white pear and fleshy citrus keeping things uplifted and moving forward. Great stuff. 35% new oak.

A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, the 2019 Domaine de Chevalier blanc skips out with bright, energetic notes of white peaches, green guava, and fresh pineapple with hints of orange blossom, chalk dust, and beeswax. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully exotic with a lovely backbone of freshness and a compelling chalky lift on the finish.

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc has a well-defined bouquet with citrus peel and light fumé scents, focused and with admirable vigor. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and intensity married with counterbalancing acidity. Cohesive with a subtle reduction on the finish - this is a quality dry white Bordeaux. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
