    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

A glorious Puligny of nuance, depth and richness. Intense, full and fruity but so fine and silky with it. Remarkably deft and precise for such a concentrated and rich wine. A texture of melting butter and ripe juicy flavours of yellow fruits on the palate with a hint of violet adding complexity. An exquisitely fine, lacy, mineral thread weaves everything together, a minerality not commonly shown in this cuvée. A rather special Combettes that displays many Grand Cru qualities. Sauzet's example of Combettes is one of the great Premiers Crus of Puligny, up there with Caillerets and Leflaive's Pucelles. From 50-65-year-old vines in the well-exposed Combettes vineyard. Like Champs Canet this is mid-slope but with a little less limestone and more clay.

Notes of mandarin oil, pear, peach and fresh bread preface the 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes, a medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping wine that is rich and fleshy, retaining good precision despite its round, ripe style. This was quite demonstrative when I tasted itunusual for this cuveebut I look forward to revisiting it after another winter on the lees.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, less expressive than the other cuvées, but a few swirls reveal intense mineral-driven malic fruit. Like the aromatics, the palate is beautifully defined and reminds me of Domaine Leflaive in style. The spiciness hits the back palate, hints of lemongrass linger in the mouth after this Les Combettes has departed. Classy but compact at the moment, so do not begrudge cellaring this for 3-5 years.
