Grape Variety:

Cinsault, 2019

Tasting Note:

Sometimes it is the simplest of wines that bring the most enjoyment, and this 2019 Cinsault is a great example of Donovan’s intuitive and adaptive approach to winemaking. A variety with some detractors in more traditional circles, the Rall Cinsault shows that when picked early and extracted softly, it produces wines that are light to medium in body with beautiful fine brambly red fruit and sweet perfumes. The ’19 has a flowing, easy quality to it, introducing more savoury iron and Rooibos tea notes with air. In Donovan’s words, “I want this to be a wine that you keep reaching back for, refreshing and easy to enjoy.” Fermented with 100% whole bunches and aged in concrete for approximately six months before bottling. 60% Swartland and 40% Darling fruit, Donovan has some prime Cinsault real-estate which he shares with Duncan Savage, who bottles his spoils under the Follow the Line label, and David Sadie who uses the Swartland fruit as a key component in Elpidios.
