Bairrada

Located on the coast of central Portugal, approximately two hours south of Porto, Bairrada is characterised by its soft, rolling hills and numerous valleys. Close proximity to the Atlantic brings with it a mild, windy and humid climate, compounded by cool clay and limestone dominated soils which helps to maintain freshness in the wines. Celebrated for its native grape varieties, particularly the red Baga, which makes up almost 75% of all plantings, and Fernao Pires, Bical and Cercial in white, the wines are on the whole fresh and expressive, with famous aging potential. Moreover, it’s cool climate, acidity-driven grape varieties and relatively abundant yields across the appellation makes Bairrada well-suited for the production of light, fine sparkling wines. The region has 7,000 hectares of vineyards, with the average size of plots being a mere 0.2 hectares.
