    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Chateau Palmer was at pains to point out that they only received 30 mm of rain in the whole of September; it is fair to say that Margaux enjoyed the best of conditions in the Medoc. They believe that 2015 sits amongst other greats such as the 2010, 2009 and 2005, and we would not disagree - these are sensational wines. 2015 was the second year the estate is fully biodynamic, although they won't be certified biodynamic until 2017. They are continuing to reduce the use of SO2 in winemaking. The first time the wines come into contact with SO2 is after the malolactic fermentations. Produced from 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Quite reserved initially, then aromas of mineral infused black fruit emerge with herbal and menthol notes. On the palate there is plenty of sweet cassis and mulberry; this is all vibrant and energetic with hints of red berries. There is a silkiness and velour texture to the fruit, which is all wrapped in luxuriant tannins. A very smart Alter Ego!

The 2015 Alter Ego has a delightful nose with poised and finely delineated brambly red fruit, undergrowth and light rose petal scents. The oak is very well integrated, though I notice a little maltiness with time. The palate is fleshy and medium-bodied with supple tannins and moderate depth. This has a mixture of black and blueberry fruit with a sense of purity on the finish, yet it just degrades in the glass and there is a strong, distracting espresso element. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

Composed of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Alter Ego de Palmer has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and gorgeous nose of ripe plums, cassis and crushed cherries with touches of incense, lavender and chocolate box. Medium-bodied, very finely crafted and vivacious in the mouth, it finishes with great elegance and finesse.
