    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The second wine from Mouton Rothschild has experience a road to Damascus style conversion. Okay, this is something of an exaggeration, it was never that bad, but, it could be a bit of a brute, now, we are delighted to report, it is a classy Pauillac that deserves serious attention. Produced from 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, it is fair to say that the second wines have definitely benefited from the reduced yields and smaller production of the Grand vins; there must be quite a lot of fruit that used to be utilized in Mouton that now finds its way into this cuvee. Cabernet perfume, graphite minerals, earth and warm cassis notes. Very ripe and pure with hints of stones and salts. Beautifully balanced; a floral and fresh Pauillac.

I'm not sure that there is a more festive wine in Bordeaux than le Petit Mouton, with its beautifully cheerful label, and its consistently seductive character. You can expect layers of damson, black cherry, grilled vanilla bean, sandalwood, incense and liquorice root, lusciously velvety tannins, balanced with fresh acidities, slate and crushed rock minerality. At this point, in 2009, Philippe Dhalluin had been technical director since 2004, and was producing exceptional wines. Harvest September 23 to October 13. 60% new oak.

The 2009 Le Petit Mouton has a classic smoke and cigar box scented bouquet with more undergrowth scents than I was expecting given the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive balance, enticing cedar-infused black fruit with pencil lead and sage towards the composed and quite persistent finish. This is evolving into an excellent Le Petit Mouton. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Years On tasting.
