Luisin, Barbaresco, Asili, 2016

2016

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Luisin, Barbaresco, Asili, 2016

Smoother and sweeter fruit than the Paolin if a little more closed. Despite the aromatic red fruit profile there is a solidity and depth here. The tannins are very present initially at the front of the palate, but gradually melt into the wild strawberry, rose apricot and cherry fruit. A lot going on here, this will need time to show at its best. A south-facing sandy vineyard, one of the great crus of Barbaresco, producing some of the region’s most aromatic and elegant wines. After a two month submerged cap fermentation the wines are then aged in used Slavonian oak casks of 20-50hl for 24 months.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2016 Barbaresco Asili is bright, perfumed and nicely lifted, with lovely sweet red berry, spice and floral character. Lithe and polished, the 2016 has plenty to offer, even if it is a bit small scaled, especially for this cru, where Barbarescos tend to have a bit more flesh. Even with time in the glass, the 2016 remains an austere Asili.

Luisin

Luisin

Founded in 1913 by Luigi Minuto, great-grand-father of current owner Roberto Minuto, Cascina Luisin has always been owned and managed by the same family. Their seven hectares are spread over prime Barbaresco real estate – mostly comprising two of the region’s great crus, Asili and Rabaja. A truly artisan operation, the quality of the Luisin wines are centred on the vineyard work which is attentive and manual, whilst wine-making is simple and un-intrusive; 28 day fermentations and macerations are followed by 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The hallmark of these classic, thrilling Barbarescos are purity and vitality, offering tension, pretty but subtle aromas, vineyard expression and finesse. Minuto is the unsung hero of the Barbaresco DOCG.
