An utterly charming Saumur-Champigny that comes, as the name would suggest, from a selection of Philippe’s vines planted on limestone
tuffe soils. Ripe, juicy and bursting with velvety redcurrant and bramble fruit, gentle acidity on the palate and notes of sweet earth, fresh
cepe, smoke and cherry towards the finish.

About Château du Hureau

Since Philippe took over in 1987, the picturesque Château de Hureau has become a yardstick for aspiring Cabernet Franc producers. The wines represent a respect for tradition with a modern twist as they are fermented at controlled temperatures in new steel vats yet oak is strictly forbidden for ageing. Though the winemaker’s deft touch can be faintly noticed in the roundness and silkiness of his wines, Philippe firmly believes that the pure and individual characteristics of grape and terroir should be allowed to sing and not be subdued by the heavy mark of oak. Old vines and heavy pruning during the growing season mean that yields here rarely exceed 35 hl/ha and result in rich, deeply concentrated wines.

A region within the western Loire known primarily for the production of light-medium bodied but extremely pretty examples of Cabernet Franc.

Grape Type: Cabernet Franc

Ripening earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc acts both as great blender with its special herb infused red berry fragrance, and at the same time as a form of insurance policy. On the cooler, clay soils of the Right Bank it adds backbone to many of the Merlot-dominated St Emilions and Pomerols. There are a small number of outstanding Cabernet Franc-based blends on the right bank, the most sought after being Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Le Dôme, Angelus and Vieux Château Certan. Outside of Bordeaux it's the major red grape of the Loire valley, where huge strides in quality have been made over the last decade by producers such as Yannick Amirault, Domaine de la Butte, Charles Joguet and Château de Hureau. Here it is mainly produced as a 100% single varietal wine, highly expressive, pungently scented, vital and silky.
