    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Alfred Tesseron has achieved so many wonderful things at Pontet Canet over the years. He was the first cru Classé to go fully biodynamic and he has re-introduced the use of horses in the vineyards, two practices that many of his neighbours have been quick to embrace. Since 1994, this Chateau has hardly put a foot wrong. Last year's release made headlines for all the wrong reasons, practically shooting the campaign down before most of the trade had even tasted the wines. This is beautifully perfumed with complex notes of pencil shavings, sandalwood, flowers and classy Cabernet fruits. There is wonderful clarity and precision to the flavours and exceptional transparency of fruit. The palate is dense and firm; there's nothing blowsy, it's all about strict, intense, gorgeous cassis and lacy dark fruit. There is lots of substance here to back up the gorgeous perfume and serious mineral notes, yet it is not at all heavy; one's lasting impression is of a wine with real energy, intensity and composure. Back on form and one of the wines to buy in 2014! 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

The 2014 Pontet-Canet is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet colored, it needs coaxing to reveal a profound core of baked plums, creme de cassis, and cigar box with wafts of tapenade, wood smoke, and mossy bark, plus a spicy hint of cumin seed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has an impressive foundation of ripe, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing on a lingering peppery note.

A clear step upwards from both the 2012 and 2013 in terms of Pauillac definition and punch, and it is following the usual trajectory of a wine from this corner of Bordeaux - meaning that it is still young at 7 years old, and needs another few years in bottle. Packed full of bilberry and cassis fruits, a deliciously cool and savoury style of Cabernet with crushed mint and blue fruits, concentrated and finessed. Plenty of juice on the finish also, I just love the progress of this wine through the palate, as it travels slowly but surely towards its destination. First year certified as Demeter (Biodyvin as of 2010, so this is a second biodynamic certification). Harvest Septeber 29 to October 10.

The 2014 Pontet Canet is a controversial showing, dividing the participants who unanimously nailed its identity. It has an opulent but well defined bouquet with black cherries, red plum, raspberry coulis and cedar aromas. Perhaps this is a little exotic for a Pauillac? The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, plenty of dark berry fruit laced with cedar and black tea, leading to a lightly spiced finish that is just missing some finesse and precision. This is undoubtedly an enjoyable Bordeaux but I have to be parsimonious with my score because although I hope that this wine would steer itself towards the stylistic traits of Pauillac, this blind showing suggests that it is veering somewhere else. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
