Alfred Tesseron has achieved so many wonderful things at Pontet Canet over the years. He was the first cru Classé to go fully biodynamic and he has re-introduced the use of horses in the vineyards, two practices that many of his neighbours have been quick to embrace. Since 1994, this Chateau has hardly put a foot wrong. Last year's release made headlines for all the wrong reasons, practically shooting the campaign down before most of the trade had even tasted the wines. This is beautifully perfumed with complex notes of pencil shavings, sandalwood, flowers and classy Cabernet fruits. There is wonderful clarity and precision to the flavours and exceptional transparency of fruit. The palate is dense and firm; there's nothing blowsy, it's all about strict, intense, gorgeous cassis and lacy dark fruit. There is lots of substance here to back up the gorgeous perfume and serious mineral notes, yet it is not at all heavy; one's lasting impression is of a wine with real energy, intensity and composure. Back on form and one of the wines to buy in 2014! 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
