The first vintage here to wear the grand cru classé label, about which I sense proprietor Karl Todeschini is rather proud. It is 75% Merlot with 25% Cabernet Franc in the blend, and there is no traditional second wine (that role is occupied by Distique, which is not really a ‘second wine’), production of this cuvée amounting to 140,000 bottles. The élevage is in 30% amphorae, 25% new and 25% second-fill oak barrels, and the rest in large oak vats. A focused and aromatically charming nose of bramble and currant fruit with notes of scented sandalwood, cedar and toast here. The palate continues with a remarkably juicy and accessible style, bright and pure, with brambles, blackberries, dark chocolate and iodine, set in a modest and sinewy frame, with a fine and coherent layer of tannins providing support. A deliciously mouth-watering style, with a finish filled with joyously sappy tannins. A wine which will drink well in a few years, but which will cellar well too. What a super result in this vintage. The alcohol on the label is 14.5%.

This is excellent. No question that it has changed from the early days of this wine, closer to the main Troplong character but that fingerprint of limestone is still very much here, with chalky tannins, coupled with ripe berry fruits, crayon, crushed rocks and a ton of damson and smoked vanilla bean. Remi Monribot cellar master, Aymeric de Gironde director. Cold soak systematically down to 2-3C for one week at least to really focus on the aromatics (after debourbage), First year with a slice of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, 35% in vat and 65% one year old barrel (from 2023 they have added large oak casks). No fining, low filtration.

The 2022 Mondot is a gorgeous, seductive Saint-Émilion. Soft contours wrap around a core of red-toned fruit, new leather, spice and blood orange. Medium in body and gracious, the 2022 is all charm. This is the first vintage that incorporates a touch of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Floral and spice overtones lift the finish effortlessly.
