    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

A classic, we unanimously agreed this was contender for wine of the vintage. Produced only from old vines (the youngest Merlot was planted in 1959 and while the youngest Cabernet Franc was planted in 1948) with no Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year. Yields averaged a mere 40 hl/ha. . The colour is ruby with a purple rim. A hint of pine needles on the nose; elegant, pure fruit on the palate, seductively supple, delicious and long. Perfect balance, very stylish, with exquisitely fine tannins. Very good indeed.

The 2004 Vieux Château Certan was picked starting September 20. This is a little fuller on the nose compared to the 2002, with more fruit concentration, red plum and raspberry, wilted rose petals and a touch of thyme. This is very endearing and open, yet there is vigor. The palate is well-balanced with finely chiseled tannins. While not the most complex vintages of this decade, it is very well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, lightly spiced with a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish. I have admired this Pomerol since first tasting it from barrel, and I still do. Drink now or over the next 12 to 15 years. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium.

This stunning blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, roasted herbs, smoke, and cassis. Elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure flavors reveal moderately high tannin, but superb concentration and richness. Vieux Chateau Certan should be one of the longer-lived and most complex wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
