Tasting Note:

The Wertheimer family who own many luxury goods brands have invested time and devotion into Chateau Canon. John Kolasa spent two decades laying the foundations, Nicolas Audebert has added the Midas touch. Since his arrival he has overseen three exceptional vintages of Canon. 2018 is a continuation of form, but the wine takes on a slightly different persona in this vintage of 'contrast'. Produced from a 24 hectare clos on the limestone plateau above Ausone and Belair Monange, we first tasted barrel samples from some of the eight coopers utilized. The wines will be racked from one barrel to a different cooper’s barrel several times during élevage. From cask the wines were so vibrant, polished and alive, full of energy. The assemblage sample certainly appeared more brooding and and dark fruited. This feels technical and serious with a deeply mineral, graphite infused palate of dark fruit, notes of cigar tobacco and flowers. Smoke, cool minerals, loganberry and rosemary slowly unfurl from the glass. This is very intense and long with a dense tannic weave; a serious, sleek mineral wine with underlying power and authority. It is so different from the seductive and voluptuous 2015 and the perfectly poised 2016, but this is no less intriguing. If it adds some sweetness and flesh during élevage this will be a very grand Canon.
