Tasting Note:

This is the first vintage since the untimely death of Denis Durantou. His daughters, Noémie and Constance have taken the reins, ably assisted by Denis’ long standing collaborator Olivier Gautrat. Noémie sums up the vintage as “Green buds in February, constant rain in spring, the aridity of summer and a mid-September harvest: wines of freshness and brightness, like a dense and colorful garden, vivacity, fruits and flowers in the rain.” Her first full vintage in charge has been a huge success. Saintayme is a blend of 80% Merlot picked on the 9th and the 16th of September and 20% Cabernet Franc. Often the weakest wine in the range, the 2020 has stepped up a gear with a fragrant bouquet of blue fruits and flowers. There’s a good, bright core of fruit: griotte, plenty of ripe plummy fruit, nice balance, plenty of intensity, much more substance than normal all wrapped in well-judged tannins. Very good.

"Deep crimson colour, plenty of deep bilberry fruits, firm tannins and good tension; a lot to like about this wine. Closes in on the finish, pretty serious in feel overall, muscular, but has the deft kick upwards that you find in many limestone-led wines in the vintage. The first year with Constance and Noemie Durantou at the helm, having taken over from their late father Denis (Noemie in particular had also worked alongside him for several years as winemaker, along with cellar master Olivier Gautrat).
