Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Expect a change from recent years for Carillon, with far less Cabernet Franc in the blend, to really give it a distinct character from Angélus. Structured and creamy, gourmet and confident studded with espresso, bitter orange zest and cocoa, together with pretty serious acidity. Winemaker Emmanuelle Fulchi d’Aligny (her last full vintage here) and Benjamin La Foret, second vintage in the new cellars. 40hl/ha yield, 3.5ph, 60% new oak.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Carillon d’Angelus is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of Morello cherries, juicy blackberries, and raspberry leaves spring from the glass, followed by touches of lilacs, cedar chest, and sandalwood, with a waft of cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of bright, expressive blackberry and spicy layers, supported by nice, ripe, plush tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.

The 2020 Le Carillon d’Angélus has a compact, tight bouquet that needs more coaxing than I anticipated, almost reluctantly offering brambly black fruit, blueberry, incense and light potpourri scents. The palate is well balanced with a lovely bead of acidity that slices through the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. I cannot recall a Carillon as precise as this, particularly on the finish. Just a superb Deuxième Vin.

Château Angélus

Château Angélus

Château Angélus, on its renowned south facing "pied de côte" (foot of the hill) site, has been looked after over four generations by the Boüard de Laforest family. The estate’s name derives from a particularly ancient plot of vineyard, from which the men tending the vines were able to hear the angelus ringing out from all three of the village churches, chapelle de Mazerat the church of Saint Martin de Mazerat and the church of Saint Emilion. At the turn of the century Maurice de Boüard de Laforest acquired this three hectare plot, adding it to the adjacent vineyard - Château Mazerat - which had been in the family since 1850. His sons Jacques and Christian expanded the holding by buying adjoining plots of land, until stopping in the 1970s. Today the property is run by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié. Angelus, a 1er Grand Cru St Emilion, is now one of the region’s great names, known particular for producing wines with a high Cabernet Franc content.
