    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Batailley was always a favourite gentleman's claret for its good value, and easy-going earthy Pauillac character. The creation of a second label Lion has led to greater selection and it feels like there is more precision during the winemaking. The new style of Batailley is much sleeker and more refined. Produced from 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot the 2021 Batailley is plush and seductive. There is a flamboyant bouquet of sweet griotte, creme de mûre, and cloves. The palate is medium bodied with suggestions of soaked fruit and a hint of leather. The tannins feel a little worked, but given the Casteja's impeccable record, we're confident this will come good.

The 2021 Batailley almost revels in a cooler, challenging vintage like this. It has a well-defined, clean, fresh, classically styled bouquet, with a pencil shaving-infused black fruit aromatic profile that could only come from Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, very harmonious with white pepper and sage, gently building in the mouth toward a cohesive, long, graphite-tinged finish. This is a Batailley that feels comfortable in its own skin. I suspect it has 25-30 years of drinking pleasure to give.

The 2021 Batailley is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie, and cedar chest with hints of lilacs, cardamon, and camphor. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled with lovely freshness and fine-grained tannins to support, finishing fragrant.

Stands out in the appellation, with density through the mid palate, and Pauillac signature coming through in the pencil lead, graphite and cassis notes. This is a good quality wine with a touch of blackcurrant bud and earth reflecting the cooler temperatures of the year, but plenty of depth and ageing potential. Tasted twice.
