Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Emrich Schönleber, Monzinger Halenberg, Riesling, Beerenauslese, 2017

A nose that initially betrays the high levels of botrytis in the blend soon freshens, like a curtains drawing back theatrically, to reveal laser etched landscape of mint and mango, chamomile then honeyed apricot and banana, jasmine and black tea. There is fabulous precision in this gloriously pure, fresh BA that is unwavering in its yogi- like balance, and diamond-like in its clear cut, precise brilliance. Pin point intensity.

David Schildknecht, Vinous

Picked-out at the end of harvest, on October 18, this elixir is dominated on the nose by mirabelle, red raspberry and white peach preserves, with a high-toned hint of honey pointing to botrytis influence. The flavors are correspondingly sweet and sappy, backed by a glycerol-rich, slippery feel. Caramel and crystallized ginger, lend both richness and incisive counterpoint in a formidably-sustained finish whose almost-sticky sweetness is tempered by enlivening squeezes of fresh grapefruit and lime.

Emrich Schönleber

Emrich Schönleber

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
