Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Laforge, St Emilion Grand Cru, 2000

The three soil types of St. Emilion give this wine a balance and harmony found in few others from the appellation. A ‘palate’ of St. Emilion. Wonderfully ripe juicy fruit aromas of blueberry, blackberry and tobacco, very pure and stylish. The same fruit expands and explodes on the palate, tannins are sweet, fine and sumptuous. The highly successful 2000 is à point right now or could be tucked away in the cellar for another decade or more.

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

Saturated dark red. Superripe aromas of roasted black raspberry, smoke and game, with a hint of exotic spices. Silky, fat and sweet, with terrific volume. Chewy, concentrated flavors of raspberry, tar, iron and mocha, with just enough acidity to maintain its shape. The rich, sweet tannins reach the front teeth. The crop level was a rather low 32 hectoliters per hectare following a saignee, according to owner Jonathan Maltus, who also makes Teyssier and Le Dome.

Château Laforge

Château Laforge

Another small operation owned by Jonathan Maltus that finds its origins on the gravel plateau around St Sulpice, south-west of the town of St Emilion. Green harvests, hand picking and 50 year old vines ensure that only the healthiest, most balanced and concentrated grapes are at the winemaker’s disposal. Contrary to Le Dôme, most of the plantings are of Merlot with about 10% consisting of Cabernet Franc. The land extends over 5 hectares so higher quantities of wine are produced per annum - about 1000 cases which is still very small by Médoc standards! The Merlot is so deep and brooding after vinification that it needs just over a year in new oak before bottling.
