    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Of the Thienpont/Derenoncourt duo of Larcis Ducasse and Pavie Macquin, the Larcis gets our nod. It is a unique style that we have come to expect from this fabulous terroir close to Chateau Pavie. Some might argue that these vineyards are in fact superior to those of the newly promoted 1er Grand Cru Classé 'A's. Deeply mineral notes mingle with aromas of very high quality fruit pastille. Intensely cassisy in character, this is exotic, but the acidity and tannins are classical and bring the wine into balance. The palate is packed with blackcurrants, dried fruits and herbs. Unique and utterly charming.

The 2012 Larcis Ducasse is medium to deep garnet colored. Bright notes of redcurrant jelly, Morello cherries, and stewed plums jump from the glass, followed by hints of cinnamon toast and potpourri. Full-bodied with soft acidity, the palate has bags of maturing black and red fruit, supported by plush tannins, finishing fragrant.

The 2012 Larcis Ducasse has a simple nose with blackberry and raspberry fruit, good concentration though it needs a little more delineation, which actually develops with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fleshy tannins. White pepper and cedar infuse the red fruit with an insistent, sappy finish; this will give another 10-15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.
