    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Emrich Schönleber, Monzinger, Riesling, Kabinett, 2013

A Kabinett of effortless balance and wonderful lively red apple and tangerine fruit. Whilst possessing as much sugar as just about any of their previous Kabinetts, the acidity here is such that the finish comes across seemingly dry. A hugely moreish and focussed Kabinett of great freshness.

Sourced from a cool, partly cobbled parcel in the Frühlingsplätzchen Einzellage – but not in the core vineyard area from which that name originated – this offers scents and generous juiciness of mirabelle and grapefruit. There is an almost plush palate impression, albeit allied to a predictable sense of alcoholic levity. Grapefruit zest and a touch of saliva-liberating salinity add to the charm of a lusciously-lingering finish. As usual at this address, the wine’s sweetness is impeccably balanced. While this year’s Kabinett won’t make anyone forget the terrific 2016, it will prove hard to resist on its own generously fruity terms.

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
