    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Chateau Figeac describe the 2017 as a rollercoaster of a vintage. Few of the big names in Bordeaux were hit so hard by the frosts. A lot of painstaking work went into this vintage, to tend the frost affected vines and care for those spared. Over 20,000 vines were marked out individually in preparation for a separate harvest. These second generation bunches were harvested in intra-plot selections and vinified in small temperate controlled vats. These berries were very small and concentrated and displayed great promise, so the grand vin incorporates roughly 10% second generation growth in the final blend. Produced from 43% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc from yields of 22 hl/ha. This is yet another very impressive Figeac with beautiful aromas of bramble fruit and mineral infused cassis. The palate is very broad and packed with cool black fruit, spice and minerals, then there are secondary nuances of mocha and Asian spice. It is all very compact with a composed, a classy Cabernet style with an outstanding tannic profile which grips the mouth and gives authority and purpose. A fabulous effort.

A frost year giving an atypical blend with extremely low Cabernget Franc. Heavy smoke aromatics on the opening beats, with firm tannins at this point, concentrated keeping everything in line. Holds its core and it opens in waves of cassis, bilberry, campfire, rose stem and tobacco leaf. Mouthwatering slate finish. Harvest September 7 to October 3, 100% new oak for ageing.

The 2017 Figeac was picked from 5 September until 3 October according to winemaker Frédéric Faye. It has a dense blackcurrant and raspberry scented bouquet with touches of mint and potpourri developing with aeration. This has very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, superb density and very fresh. A vibrant, minty finish lingers in the mouth. It is very backward of course, but there is such convincing energy locked in this wine. Great potential.
