Big, explosive, concentrated dark berry fruit infused with blood orange, scorched earth and sweet spice characteristics. The bold and powerful flavours interwoven with binding but sweet tannins. A dominant, forceful wine. A blockbuster. A vineyard selection from within the Ginestra that stays on its skins after fermentation for a little longer than the regular bottling, 40 days. Ageing is for 6 years in large used Slavonian oak casks. Only produced in the best vintages, production is usually around 4000 bottles.

About Paolo Conterno

Founded by Paolo Conterno in 1886, it was Paolo’s son Carlo who started to bottle the estate’s own production in small quantities. Today the estate, spanning 10 ha which are mainly centred around the fabulous Ginestra Cru of Monforte, is managed by the fourth generation of Conternos, Giorgio and Marisa. The Baroli are aged in large 35hl French oak barrels for at least 3 years followed by a further 6-12 months in bottle, whilst the Baroli Riserva is aged for 4 year in barrel and 12 months in bottle. Thanks to Giorgio and Marisa the plaudits have been streaming in of late. They seem to have an extraordinary ability to take the stout, mineral and sturdy form Monforte Baroli so often have and craft them in to something very polished without loss of character. This has now become an exciting Barolo estate well worth following.

Appellation: Piedmont

Piedmont sitting at the foot of the mountains is justly regarded as one of, if not the finest wine growing region in Italy. The noblest grape found in the region in undoubtedly Nebbiolo, with the DOCG's of Barolo and Barbaresco at the forefront of production. Barbera and Dolcetto come in second and third, and being earlier ripening are often found located on those sides of the hills that receive less sunshine. The wines from Piedmont are intrinsically food friendly wines, a fact understandable given the culinary strength of the area.

Grape Type: Nebbiolo

Arguably Italy's greatest red grape variety, responsible in North-West Italy’s Piedmont region for the great reds of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. At its best it produces wines of an aromatic complexity and subtlety similar to that of great Burgundy, a region from where many pioneering producers such as Elio Altare drew their inspiration. The aromas and flavours are very different in profile to Pinot Noir however, usually characterised by roses, tar and truffle. Naturally tannic and acidic, Nebbiolo wines are excellent for long term ageing.
