Giovanni Corino, Barolo, Vecchie Vigne, 2004

2004

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Giovanni Corino, Barolo, Vecchie Vigne, 2004

A blend of old vines Giachini and Rocche aged in 100% new oak for the same length of time as Corino’s other 2004 Cru wines but kept in bottle longer. An absolutely fantastic wine; velvety, stylish but powerful, ripe but fresh, boasting creamy blueberry flavours, notes of bramble, cherry and fresh currant, tight-knit and smooth but by the finish the wine is already starting to burst at the seams. A wonderfully balanced and intense Barolo that should have a long life ahead of it.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

A dark, powerful wine, the 2004 Barolo Vecchie Vigne has plenty of textural depth, but less overall freshness than the other wines in the range. The style is explosive and textured, but the fruit has been flattened by excessive oak. Giuliano Corino's Vecchie Vigne is 100% old-vine fruit from Giachini, a site that is capable of considerable finesse, if it is sought.

Giovanni Corino

Giovanni Corino

The Corino brothers are the rising stars of Piedmont. Their wines are beautiful examples of La Morra Barolos. Perfumed, subtle and elegant with the balancing acidity and fine tannin that make them so complete. Giuliano emphasises: “Barolo doesn’t have to just be about power.’’ A tasting of some beautifully refined and fresh 1991s, over a decade on, would seem to full justify this statement. As of the 2004 vintage the estate has been split in two, Giuliano will produce wines from Arborina, Giachini and will continue to make a Vecchie Vigne. Renato, who has set up his own estate, will produce Rocche, Arborina and some Vecchie Vigne. The Giovanni Corino wines continue to remain in a beautiful floral, red fruited, elegant style.
