Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Clos des Cazaux, Gigondas, Cuvée de la Tour Sarrazine, 2020

A wine of tremendous expression and instant impact. An explosion of complex fruit immediately floods the senses. Strapping, full bodied but the most stunningly detailed fruit to go with the structure – this is sheer autumnal joy. Tannic but not aggressive, the structure binds the complex fruits together – briar and bramble with a redder tinge of damson and Victoria plum, with liquorice spice providing background. Stunning, one of the best examples Jean-Michel has made. An unoaked blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre from rocky, late-ripening parcels high up in the Dentelles de Montmirail.

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Deep, brilliant ruby color. Sharply focused, spice-tinged black raspberry, cherry, potpourri and garrigue scents pick up a smoky mineral nuance with air. This offers concentrated raspberry, kirsch, succulent herb and floral pastille flavors, lifted by a suggestion of white pepper. Fine-grained tannins come in slowly and add shape and grip to a strikingly long, floral-driven finish, showing firm tension and final cut. Raised in concrete and stainless steel tanks.

Clos des Cazaux

Clos des Cazaux

The families Vache and Archimbaud have grown vines in the Vacqueyras area for 3 centuries. Gabriel Archimbaud participated in the process of the creation of the Côtes du Rhône appellation and he named his own domaine Clos des Cazaux. His granddaughter married Maurice Vache, her two sons Jean-Michel and Frédéric Vache run the domain today and is the 5th generation of pure vignerons. The brothers are meticulous, obsessively so, their hands on vine-growing and wine-making are resulting in impeccably pure, bright, soulful Southern Rhônes. WINemaking is designed to enhance the quality and purity of the fruit, élévage is uniquely in steel and concrete vat. The delicious Templiers is made mainly from old vines Syrah displaying great depth, dark fruit richness and finesse. The complex, structured and powerful Gigondas La Tour Sarrazine, which only comes from vines high up in the Dentelles, is a full-flavoured Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre blend that demonstrates the harmonising effect of good fruit and acidity in a wine. These are some of the most consistently exciting, and underrated, wines in the Southern Rhône.
