Château Potensac, Médoc, 2022

critic reviews

92/100Chris Kissack,The Wine Independent

The blend of Potensac is 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36.5% Merlot, 19.5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, including 13% press wine, and the élevage lasted twelve months in 20% new oak barrels, a little more new wood than is usual, the rest in used barrels from Léoville-Las-Cases. The aromatics here are very expressive and forward, with powdered chalk, dried berries, pressed wildflowers and mint. The palate builds on this with a solid composition, a core of savoury fruit, lifted by notes of black pepper and violets, with a dense frame of compact and finely knit tannins. This holds together really well on the palate, showing great structure and modest density of fruit, and the fresh acid lift of the vintage. Delightful, fruit-forward, tannin-washed finish makes this a Potensac for the cellar. The alcohol on the label is 14.5%.

Deep plum in colour, this is definitely an impressive Potensac, a ton of graphite, poise, reserve, excellent balance, gives Médoc typicity but also the Delon seriousness and ageability. You can drink this now if you like this pumped up Left Bank feel, or wait, enjoy the slow burn cassis and bilberry. Definitely one to watch.

The 2022 Potensac, matured in 20% new oak, was one of the best vintages from this Haut-Médoc that I had tasted from barrel. Now in bottle, this is blessed with an impressive, well-defined, focused nose. Its oak is neatly integrated, with plenty of vibrant black fruit laced with light estuarine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and very saline, with touches of sapid black fruit, black olive and black pepper. It's nicely controlled and classical, with residual pepperiness on the finish. This is very fine.

Aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and licorice introduce the 2022 Potensac, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy Medoc with a deep core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins. It's built along similar lines to the 2020.
